PS2 Newbie!

the PS2 has been out a long time. and the PS3 is nearly here.
I've still got an original PSX in a box somewhere (it's older than my son!
but went off it when I got a PC.
I've come around to getting a PS2 for a few reasons. One of them is Rogue
Trooper.
The other is Buzz! and Eye Toy for the kids.
I used to play Ace Combat. Armoured Core and Front Mission 3 on my PSX.
Of these franchises on the PS2. which ones are the best? any good third-person shooters. RPGs or tank battle games?
The PS2 does NOT improve the graphics of PSX games at all. The PS3 will
supposedly do that but I can't see how.

Good example of Xbox and Xbox360 getting bullied by the PS2.

It looks good but you have to consider in the fact that the image you
see is in high resolution. Even the crappiest PS2 game like Summoner
will look pretty decent in high res.

$500 or $600 PS3 with a PIECE OF SHIT low-end, old, Nvidia GPU?

the price of each PS3 SKU/ package.
but in November 2006 we're getting a PS3 with a 550 MHz Nvidia
graphics processor. now there is talk/rumor/speculation that the RSX is not even
clocked at 550 MHz anymore. Sony did not list the
clockspeed of the GPU. leading many to believe another downgrade is in
store. (rumored clockspeed of RSX is now 430 MHz). Even if this is not
true. -less pixel pipelines / rops
-a narrow 128-bit memory bus instead of the wider 256-bit bus of
highend GPUs
-most likely fewer vertex shaders. fewer pixel shaders. fewer texture
units
core clockspeed does not matter that much. the amount of
functional units inside a GPU matters a whole lot more .
(as does their effectiveness. but we don't have to get into
effectiveness since we're comparing apples to apples. PS3's budget went into CELL. Rambus XDR memory. and PS2 backwards compatibility.... while sticking in a
low-end. until PS3 has games that I
simply cannot do without. will force
Sony's hand.

there's no point comparing a console to a PC because
you're basically comparing two entirely different things.
I just want to comment on BluRay very quickly. A lot of people are
seeing BluRay as being a great investment if you're purchasing the PS3.
I have to admit I still fail to see the utility of the BluRay. Yes it
has more space and yes it will allow for seasons of TV shows to fit
onto fewer discs. allow for high-definition movies and what not but
let's face the fact: DVD looks great and the difference between a DVD
on a regular TV and a BluRay disc on a regular TV will not exist. As
well. the difference between an upscaled DVD movie on a high-def TV
vs. a BluRay movie on a high-def TV will be negligeable to the regular
viewer.

Who are you talking to? I HAVE seen a high-def TV and a
normal TV. My house is filled with high-def TV's and I've owned an LCD
and a CRT HDTV as well as been exposed to a Plasma HDTV. The difference
is significant however. and I ermphasize this again. UPSCALING RENDERS
THE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT FROM DVD TO BLURAY INSIGNIFICANT.

and I ermphasize this again.
quite a few of them.
quite a few of them.

(Nintendo DS) IT SUCKS!!

That new Mario game as been out for a month. I want to get it but I
don't want to buy that big ugly Nintendo DS. I have to wait to June
11th to buy the Nintendo DS Light. the cool looking version of the
Nintendo DS.
I love Mario games. and this Mario game is suposed to be pretty damn
good. I just rather have a cool looking Nintendo DS than a big ugly
looking Nintendo DS.
So I hope the ma fuckas at the store aren't lazy and stock that shit
right away. God damn I can't wait to play that Mario Brothers game on
the cool looking Nintendo DS that comes out on June 11th.
Perkoff-No I don't work for Nintendo. but if they want to hire me. I LOVE YOU NINTENDO!
but if they want to hire me. I LOVE YOU NINTENDO!
I learned with the N64 that you NEVER buy a console just for the game.
Nintendo will never see another dime of mine for putting out that piece of
shit.

Technically the DS doesn't suck. The hardware is pretty nice
(especially the DS Lite). The problem is the games suck.
So far there seems to be only 3 reviews of the new Mario game that
aren't written by Nintendo fanboys.
I'm going to declare this the worst Mario side scroller ever!
The problem begins when you're halfway through and notice something
odd: everything feels like you've done it before. I touched on this
earlier but there is hardly anything new! Everything that is new to the
series is usually tucked away in a hidden level or is rarely used. For
example. those baby wigglers are in one and only one level. It is
almost as if half way into production one of the higher ups saw the
progress. wasn't happy and forced them to stick to the old formula
that's more than a decade old. The game is also really short.
although it didn't have to be. You see there are two entire zones you
can skip. Now this isn't like the older games where the secret to
skip is well hidden. Here it is almost mandatory since it acts like a
fork in the road that leads to the same destination. The game's also
lacking any type of difficulty. I'm not sure if it's because of the
checkpoints inserted into most levels or the fact that I was all too
familiar with it. but it was a real cakewalk.
With Nintendo recently talking about how innovation is key when showing
off the Nintendo Wii. or even when DS games like Nintendogs and Brain
Age are mentioned you'd think the programmers behind New Super Mario
Bros. would of gotten a memo but I guess I need to tell them: you need
to innovate. at least they imitated from one of
the best video games ever made.
every last secret is unearthed and you've played
through most stages until you know them by heart. That's when you
start asking yourself if the game is really so perfect as you once
thought. if it really lived up to its heritage. For me. New Super Mario
Bros. was just one more great game that wasn't perfect. I'd
recommend it to my Mario-loving friends. and I'm sure I'll continue
to play it for years to come. but I'm not going to kid myself: it
could have been better. We can tell ourselves it's perfect. We can
even believe it. But at the end of the day. those golden coins aren't
going to collect themselves and we won't clear every last stage
without stumbling through blind corners and across bottomless chasms
more frustrating than they are fun. If it's all the same to you.
I'll save my "10"s for the Mario games that deserve them. This
just isn't one of them.
New Super Mario Bros. is not a bad game. The level of nostalgia is
really unsurpassed. However. the quest ends a little too quickly and
the lack of flight is a tremendous downer. Also. only having two types
of suits (fireball Mario and Shell Mario) is very lacking. Super Mario
Bros. 3 and Super Mario World had numerous forms to transform into as
well as new modes of transportation (Yoshi. flute).
Perhaps my expectations are a little too high. but isn't that what
Mario is all about? Mario games always make so much use out of having
so little. Not that this game doesn't do that. it's just that it
doesn't has too. The 3D processing power and larger cart size should
have allowed the developers to add so much more into the final product.
Before you play this game. think to yourself that you will be playing a
game on the same level of quality as Mario 1. not Mario 3 or Mario
World. Then you will probably enjoy your time with this game a little
more.

i am not going to get the new mario game because i dont like what they
have done with it. also what game did you get for the N64 all the
games that i own i sometimes still play because they are fun and still
look good for what i paid for it. I also love Nintendo even though i
dont own a game cube (not even jesus owns a game cube).

Ken Kutaragi: PS3 platform is made for "e-Distribution"

In the third part of PC Impress Watch interview. SCEI's Ken Kutaragi
discusses the potential of digitally delivering content to Sony's
next-generation console.
Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi continued to discuss
SCEI's plans for the PlayStation 3 in the third part of an interview
with Japanese site PC Impress Watch.
At the 1999 Microprocessor Forum. Kutaragi set out a vision of
e-Distribution using broadband networks. At that time. most consumers
still connected to the Internet with dialup. so that vision was largely
ignored. But now Kutaragi stated that Sony will emphasize network
features with the Playstation 3. "We really wanted to do this with the
PS2. Apple has realized a successful
e-Distribution program. It's about time we made our move. "We'll be conducting network services from launch day." He
explained why he has steered clear of the e-Distribution topic at
conferences. "Talking about our distributors and network services isn't
very engaging. Regarding the business aspect of the PS3's online components. Sony
seems to be taking its cues from the PC. "You can't charge money for
network matching and other basic services. These things are just taken
for granted on the PC...On the PS3. basic services will be taken for
granted while content will be the bread and butter of our business."
Kutaragi does not think it will take long for digitally delivered PS3
content to catch on and gave a time frame of one to two years. With the
availability of networked entertainment. it would seem that having
optical drives would cease to be important. but Kutaragi goes one step
further. "I expect even the hard disk to disappear eventually. If you
have all the data on servers. you probably no longer need disk
drives...But to do this. the server is crucial. It's a difficult
problem."
Kutaragi also predicted the PS3 would be welcomed warmly by an industry
trying to cope with falling DVD sales and looking for a successor. He
made the further claim that the "PS3 will be the trigger that ignites
flat-panel TV sales."
He also discussed the potential of using multiple Cell processors in
concert. "Users will be able to connect to Polyphony Digital's server.
So I want it to be a Cell server. with the number of Cells at a
thousand to several thousand. This would allow us to maintain an entire
cyberworld. as long as our power supply holds up."

why such the expensive Blu-Ray drive if it isn't for games?

Apple PlayStation?

Regarding the PS3's high sticker price. Kutaragi explained it was all a
matter of brand perception. "Steve Jobs could slap an Apple logo on the PS3
and sell them for $2." he said. "We couldn't do that. That's the
difference between the PlayStation brand and a computer brand. like Apple."
He also expressed Sony's wish to make "PlayStation" a byword for
"entertainment computer."

PS2 outsells xflop 3-shitty again in May 2006

xflop 3-shitty sales have slowed and the PS2 outsells it.
The really bad part for the xflop 3-shitty is that its sales slow way
down from here until late September or October. with virtually no
titles until then. Meanwhile. the PS2 actually has a few strong titles
over the next few months.
